Alliance and classification among the Lamet

Abstract
Drawing on ethnographic and linguistic data collected on Rmeet (Lamet) peoples’ kinship terms, descent rules and marriage practices, this article shows the existence of asymmetric alliances between villages prescribed as “wife-givers” and “wife-takers.” Analysis of marriages reveals that the asymmetric alliance between these two groups is reproduced in many ways, including in gifts among families, the internal structure of dwellings, etiquette when hosting guests, and symbolic expressions.
