expand_more Description
The Mon-Khmer speaking Rmeet of northwestern Laos live in small mountain villages, subsisting principally on shifting, available-moisture cultivation of rice. They also grow maize, pumpkin, chili pepper and other vegetables, and gather wild bamboo shoots. Rmeet society is divided into patrilineal groups that relate to each other as wife-givers and wife-takers, viewing wife-givers as inherently superior. These asymmetric alliances are central to ceremonies and rituals involving gift exchanges.
