Abstract
This article examines the sociocultural construction of ideas of good leadership in rural Vietnam, their influence on local political life, and the different moral notions that Vietnamese bring to the political process. Through an examination of the careers of two politicians in a commune south of Hanoi, the author's analysis aims to clarify the multiple and sometimes contradictory standards by which people evaluate their leaders and to show how the application of these standards has begun to directly affect the election of public officials (p. 900).
