By: Claeys, Jean Yves, Greene, Liliane.

AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
Claeys was Director of Studies at l'école Française d'Extreme-Orient and Correspondent of the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle. In writing this article which was to be the first of a series on Annamese naval construction and the rites connected with boats, fishing and the sea, he was assisted by two native informants: Cong-Van-Trung and Pham-Van-Chung. Among other sources of information were numerous archaeological and ethnological missions, the latter for the purpose of completing the collections of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris. The article is almost exclusively concerned with the fishing rafts of Luong-nhiem (Thanh-hoá) made of floating bamboo and is very informative about their construction, navigation, use in fishing, maintenance and associated rituals. A list of fish brought by the rafts to the Sam-son market is included.
