Abstract
This book covers the struggle over Uyghur identity between local residents, Uyghur elites, and the Chinese government. Local Uyghurs most readily identify with their home town or oasis, in contrast to attempts by urban elites to formulate a pan-oasis nationalist identity. Cross-border contacts affect local oasis identities, as in the oasis of Turpan which historically had close ties with China, especially through Turpan merchants who hold favorable attitudes towards the Chinese. The author examines various loci for identity formation at both the local and urbanized elite levels, including folk religion, Islam, marriage, literature, and historiography.
