The Uyghur are a Turkic ethnic group speaking an Eastern Turkic language who are found mostly in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in western China, with smaller but significant numbers in the Central Asian republics of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, and far fewer in Turkmenistan and Tajikistan. Once pastoralists, Uyghurs settled oasis regions where they traditionally practice a mixed agriculture including cash crops and livestock, and participate extensively in trade; many recently have found employment in mineral and petroleum extraction. The majority of the Uyghur are Sunni Muslims. Modern Uyghur literature ranges from short stories, essays, and love poetry to epic folk legends
