Village to distant village: the opportunities and risks of long-distance marriage migration in rural China

Abstract
This study examines the status of long-distance wives who marry outside their province. The findings suggest that long-distance wives have a lower status and fewer property rights compared to women who marry within their village, township, or county. Some of the reasons for this variation are cultural; wives coming from afar are stigmatized because they speak different languages or dialects and practice different cuisines. Another reason for the lower status of long-distance wives has to do with lack of rights to property or affines close by for support.
