The author analyzes the seminal ethnography by Fei (1946), conveying an 'ontology of realism' for women's lives in a rural peasant village. This is done through the importance of non-agnatic relationships in the village and an examination of local practices and beliefs, especially ones regarding marriage and involving the stove god who represents the ancestry of wife-givers. Fei (1946) is included in eHRAF.
