Family management and family division in contemporary rural China

China quarterly (130)Published In 1992 • Pages: 357-377

By: Cohen, Myron L..

Abstract
This is a study of the reemergence of the family as an economic unit and actor in China's post-collectivization period. The author makes a distinction between the family head and manager, the two not necessarily coinciding. It is suggested that while the household has reemerged as an economic unit, the large joint family, a typical arrangement in the past, is now rare. The study includes a contemporary examination of the process of family division compared to the past.
