Lineage organization in north China

By: Cohen, Myron L..
Abstract
This study examines northern Chinese lineages, which the author contrasts with the southern cases that were the subject of earlier scholarship. He argues that the “fixed genealogical mode of agnatic kinship” found in the North differs from southern lineage structures in that northern groups lack corporate organization yet still foster solidarity through shared rituals and communal feasting.
