Collectivization, kinship, and the status of women in rural China

Abstract
This study examines the post-Liberation status of women based on her own fieldwork as well as previous ethnographic accounts. While women’s status has vastly improved since 1949, the author notes that it is still not on par with men. The discussion emphasizes the continued practice of patrilocality, unequal work compensation, and the dual burden on women (unpaid domestic work as well as paid outside work) as sources of persistent inequality.
