Abstract
An American missionary's account of Chinese village life at the end of 19th century. The author lived in a small village in Shandong province and bases his accounts on his own observations, conversations, and what he read in gazetteers and newspapers. Topics covered include village headmen, bullies, magistrates, scholar/teachers, and the feasting that occurs on all occasions. While not free of Western biases, altercations that occur in rural life and how they are mediated with minimal state intervention are documented.
