Abstract
This study is a product of one and one half years of field work in the Chinese community of Ch'u Hsien. The major contribution of the book is in the area of non-kin based relationships. The author discusses Chinese society based primarily on relationships which transcend mere kinship. The theoretical contribution is aimed toward differentiating between societies based on kinship and those based on non-kinship. Class structure and the changing culltural milieu are dealt with. Some of the socio-economic factors leading to the Communist victory are touched upon. Kin terminological problems are treated briefly. Land tenure, occupational specialization and local customs are als covered.
