AbstractBrief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document
The author's lifetime familiarity with the village gives this community study exceptional worth. The village is first placed in the surrounding ecological and technological environment. Agriculture is thoroughly analyzed. This is followed by an extensive treatment of the family that encompasses a major section of the book. A breakdown is given concerning the role of the family in economic, ceremonial and community pursuits in general. The last third of the book gives insight into village organization in all its aspects. A chapter is devoted to the biography of one of the boys of the village. Emphasis is placed on his activities at play, work, and, especially, in school. The author concludes with summary paragraphs of previous material along with his conception of socio-cultural trends in the village and in relation to China in general.
