Abstract
This is a study of the Chinese rural economy. It contains a comparison of three agricultural communities; in the first village, income is derived almost exclusively from agriculture; in the second, income from agriculture is supplemented by some simple industries; in the third village, more complex commerce and industries have developed. The authors discuss the economic problems, such as those of land distribution and the falling living standards of the peasants, which have resulted from increased industrialization and commerce.
