Abstract
This is a competent study of the status and functions of the Chinese family system, taken longitudinally. Major emphasis is placed on contemporary trends and a largely successful effort is made to link the discussion of the family with socio-economic and cultural considerations. The data was gathered during 1936-1937, and was built up from large-sample questionnaires, intensive clinical-type case interviews and material culled from literary texts and other written materials.
