Tourism, formulation of cultural tradition, and ethnicity: a study of the DAIYAN identity of the Wulai Atayal

Abstract
The author discusses the impact of ethno-tourism on an ethnically mixed northern mountain village. While tourism has brought in needed revenue, most businesses are owned by Han Chinese rather than local ethnic groups. Also, much of what is sold as local crafts are manufactured by Han Chinese in the central Taiwan city of Puli. The author argues that the artifacts and designs, although not authentically traditional, nevertheless have become potent symbols of a pan-indigenous identity movement.
