Abstract
This study analyzes the politics of rural Taiwanese township of about 28,000 people. After outlining the political and administrative systems of the township in the context of greater Taiwanese politics, Jacobs discusses social, economic, and historical administrative boundaries in 'Matsu' and shows how they coincide with lines of political alliance and cleavage.
