Abstract
This book reconstructs from archival sources the history of the Lins, a pioneer family in Taiwan, in the context of the island's society as it emerged and developed over the course of several centuries. Each chapter covers a specific time period and the role of individual Lins in both local history and their interrelations with Chinese, and later Japanese, imperial governments. As the Lins were peasant pioneers, petty rural traders, landlords, local strongmen, military officers, and gentry, Meskill states that their family history may 'serve as the key to the history of an entire region' (p. 5).
