Abstract
This essay considers the relevance of the distinctions between various categories of acquired and inherited property for differences in household and family structure among rural-dwellers near the town of Shu-lin. Several case-studies are presented of the developmental cycle for families in different social circumstances, illustrating the range of variation in emphasis upon extended or nuclear families, separate or compound households, weak or strong parental authority.
