Abstract
This source contains the chapters from Norbeck's book which deal with the hamlet of Takashima. Chapter 2 describes the life of a household in the predominantly fishing hamlet of ca. 1950-1951. Chapter 4, based on field work conducted in 1974, describes the same community after land reclamation and industrialization changed it from an island to a suburb of the city of Kurashiki. These changes involved the complete disappearance of fishing as the main source of employment. The author concentrates on the lives of members of a single household.
