Abstract
This is a short article dealing with '...the nature of the changes in kumiai social structure that were known to have been going on for many years' (p. 2). The author compared 10 such neighborhood associations from four villages, Kamoson, Shoson, Kojoson, and Fujitason. He divided them into 'mature' and 'recent' and investigated the differences between the two. He concluded that in terms of structural features, there is little difference between the 'mature' and the 'recent' associations, but there are differences in details (p. 9). Furthermore, there is a trend 'away from reliance on and cooperation with relatives and toward greater ties with non-kin...' (p. 11).
