Abstract
During a period of 18 months Carles made two trips into the north-western and north central areas of Korea. The first trip was undertaken privately while the second followed the appointment of Carles as British Vice-Consul in Korea. The routes he followed and the general observations he made are quite similar to 46: Bishop. The differential attitudes and behavior which his visits engendered on both villagers and officials is especially worthy of attention. Note: the Amnok, which is frequently referred to in the text, is the Yalu River.
