This pamphlet is the report of a survey of rural conditions in Korea undertaken especially for the International Missionary Council. Thirty-five villages were surveyed for basic data on population, family budgets, land-ownership crop yields, income and debt, and an over-all examination of the effects of economic depression on Korea. Interviews were conducted with a number of village leaders to determine attitudes on the chief economic problems. The purpose of the study was to indicate the problems facing the Church in its efforts to extend missionary endeavor. This, one of the earliest scientific studies of rural Korea, provides extensive information on history and culture change, economic behavior, and community structure. Considerable demographic data is also included and some attention is paid to regional differences in Korean social structure, the author attempting to demonstrate some correlations between goegraphic differences with different social organizations for North and South Korea. Parts IV and V which deal with the status and program of the church in Korea have not been excerpted for the files.
