Abstract
This book is the first work on Korea by a professional ethnographer. Its five parts consist first of a study of a typical Korean farming village on the island of Kanghwa. The data on this village were recorded by observation and from local informants during the summer of 1947, with the assistance of two Korean students. In the second part the culture of the upper class is examined on the basis of information available in the extant literature (see category 113 for bibliographical references used). The third part, an outline of Korean political history, is based mainly on Hulbert's translation of the TONG KANG YO, a Korean summary of the four ancient histories of the country. Part four is an extesive culture summary resting upon the work of Hulbert and later sources. The fifth and final part, dealing with modern Korea and the events leading up to the war, is based upon personal observations, discussion with individuals directly involved, and an examination of the literature dealing with the contemporary period.
