Abstract
The general purpose of this paper is to present a critical review of the nature and use of life history materials as a method in anthropology, grounding it in both philosophy and theory. The study '…goes on to review the practical issues of doing life histories before presenting a case study of an Italian-Canadian family in an industrial city. The paper concludes with two commentaries: the first on how the case informs on ethnic identity and identity retention, the second on what the life history approach means for the practice of research' (p. 104).
