Abstract: Brief abstract written by HRAF anthropologists who have done the subject indexing for the document This document offers an excellent account of Shilluk settlement organization. The author discusses the relationship of lineages to community organization, the manner in which hamlets within a settlement develop and die out, and the role of the founding lineage in the community. The age-grade organization which is seldom mentioned in other documents is described and its function as a means of uniting different kinship groups for defense is examined. The author is an ethnologist.
