Abstract
The emphasis in this work is on the differential responses of men and women in their relationships to each other through the cycle of life and death. Weiner also discusses the roles of men and women, a topic given little coverage by Malinowski. Data are presented on the internal exchanges of female and male wealth at the hamlet level, a general overview of Kiriwina today, the significance of the levels of organization of Trobriand social life, life cycle events, death rituals, child and adolescent development, exchange events particularly in reference to father-son relations, land tenure, the annual yam distribution from men to women, and the distribution of women's wealth in mortuary ceremonies. The monograph concludes with a discussion of the nature of Trobriand exchange and an evaluation of female and male domains of power.
