Abstract
This monograph on the Fox use of plants for medicine, magic, food, dyes, and fibers is based on Smith's fieldwork in 1923 as well as collections made by William Jones in 1900. Plants are identified by their scientific names and their common names in English, Fox, and Prairie Potawatomi. Indices on pages 275-307 are keyed to the scientific and common names and should be useful in locating information in the text. Since Smith's main informant on medicinal plants was a Prairie Potawatomi living amongst the Fox, it is possible that some of the medicinal uses of plants assigned to the Fox really pertain to the Potawatomi. Although Smith includes a few introductory remarks about the history and culture of the Fox, it is necessary to consult other sources for the socio-cultural context within which these plants were used.
