Abstract
This source, with the exception of chapter 2 which deals with the tribal organization and certain aspects of the general ethnography of the Bedouin of Cyrenaica, is concerned primarily with the origin, development and cultural history of the Sanusi Order -- an Order of Sufis who are Sunni or orthodox Muslims -- within the Cyrenaican region of Libya. The author traces the development of the Order from its inception in 1837 by the Grand Sanusi Sayyid Muhammad bin Ali al-Sanusi through its religious-political role during the Italian-Sanusi wars and subsequent periods of peace (1911-1932) to its final collapse at the end of the second war in 1932. The author, a well-known anthropologist, had the opportunity to study this group during a period of approximately two years (1942-1944) while serving as Political Officer to the third British Military Administration of Cyrenaica.
