Abstract
This is a study of change in a multi-ethnic town in the Balikesir region of northwestern Turkey. The author chronicles the history of settlement in the town and changes over time to family relations, household structure, social values, authority, and religion. He presents a more complex picture of change than conventional modernization scenerios. For example, he explains the increase in nuclear families as a result of urban migration as married brothers leave their extended families to live in the city, where extrafamilial relationships are reconstituted based on ethnicity and home region.
