By: Morris, Lydia.

Abstract
In this article Morris discusses household forms in relation to socio-economic status in El Bajo, a coastal community of Puerto Rico. The economic situation is described as it exists there, and various forms of public assistance are detailed. Comparisons are made between the increase of marital instability with the introduction of financial assistance to single mothers and the decrease in instability where the man is regularly employed. A major focus of this study is on matrifocality and the female-headed household, a newly emergent form which has developed in reponse to the practical demands of the current situation in El Bajo.
