Abstract
This article offers a wealth of data concerning the technical and ritual aspects of Warao canoe-making. Transmission of canoe-making skills during childhood and adolescence is discussed, along with the ritualistic initiation of an adult as a prestigious master craftsman. The canoe is seen to be the crucial, central symbol of Warao existence; integrated both with tribal mythology and the natural environment.
