Abstract
This article is an attempt to explain Warao society by means of formal analysis of the relationship terminology, a statement of the marriage rules, and an empirical examination of the alliance system. The author suggests on the basis of her analysis that Warao society has undergone a structural change from a two-section system of symmetric prescriptive alliance towards a cognatic and preferential system. An extensive review of earlier sources on Warao kinship is included, as well as statistical data on marital exchange in three Warao villages.
