Abstract
This article focuses on leadership among the Nambiquara of Brazil. It tries to overcome preconceptions of the Nambiquara leadership as an egalitarian system grounded in a social structure that emphasizes the ties between siblings. It argues that Nambiquara men do not assume leadership seeking compensation in the form of extra wives as claimed by previous ethnographers. Their main motive was rather ensuring the well-being of their kin by taking additional responsibilities.
