Abstract
This article examines the activist roles of two carnival groups (BLOCOS AFRO) in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, in their attempts through songs and musical performances to heighten racial consciousness among the Afro-Brazilian population. The focus in this study is on the Ile Aiye and Olodum groups which have articulated some of the discontents within the Afro-Bahian community. Several representative songs are presented in the text.
