Abstract
The ethnic and religious prejudices of the author, a Franciscan missionary, are on full display in this frequently disparaging survey of Chiriguano culture. If one can read past the spiritual injunctions against the Chiriguano, it is possible to find a fair amount of useful and valuable qualitative data on the political system and the nature of power and authority, settlement patterns and house construction, family organization and socialization, warfare, secular ceremonies, technology and material culture. Additionally, there is some description of the local the geography, and discussion of Chiriguano knowledge and uses of plants and animals, and concepts of disease, medical therapy, and death. Otherwise, coverage of economic activities is thin and fragmentary. Unsurprisingly, the author comments on displays of native resistance and acceptance of the missions’ efforts at religious proselytization and secular change.
