Abstract
This is the preface to the 1984 edition of Harner's 'The Jívaro,' originally pulished in 1972. In this preface Harner refers to ethnographic works that have been published since his first edition. He also discusses the subsequent fate of the Shuar and their successful organization into a federation with the help of missionaries. According to Harner this was a necessary step in the onslaught of colonization occurring in the area and pending loss of Shuar land and territory Shifting to cattle ranching also helped to secure Jivaro control of land. Harner also discusses Jivaro relationships to the pan-Indian movement and Ecuadorian government, and the etimology of the terms 'Jivaro' and 'Shuar.'
