Abstract
This is an article on the history of settlement patterns of the Chachi. The author critiques Barrett's thesis (see document no. 3) that the Chachi migrated down from the Andes in the 16th Century. Instead they were pushed up river by settlements of Maroons along the coast. The Chachi did construct uninhabited ceremonial settlements in the interior which give the appearance of an abandoned site. According to the author the dispersed settlement pattern of the Chachi along the rivers is influenced by soil type and labor requirements of their swidden cultivation.
