Abstract
This is perhaps the classic ethnography on the Yakut, based on twelve years of research (1880-1892); the complete text translated from the Russian by HRAF. It includes comprehensive description of Yakut environment (flora and fauna), history, economy, social and political organization, kinship, literature, and religion. Written at atime when Yakut culture had changed under the influence of Russian administration, from nomadic, herding way of life to experimentations with agriculture, the author in various places surmises Yakut precontact way of life by analyzing language, customs, and kinship terminology. The work contains some evocative descriptions of marriage ceremonies, shamanic performances, climate, and childhood.
