Abstract
This is a detailed study of the nationalized Kazakh holiday known as {n]Nawriz[/n], the Central Asian New Year, which was introduced to the Kazakh people by the Soviet government during the late Soviet period. This holiday was ostensibly a means of appealing to and unifying specific national populations of Central Asia. In this document Eitzen describes the history and origin of [n]Nawriz[/n] and its religious and secular components.
