Abstract
This article discusses changes in pastoral land use among the Kazak of China. The focus is on land use changes in two locations with varying level of integration to the larger Chinese society. It shows that in the first township, Jianshe, experienced Kazak herders are dislocated by inexperienced Han immigrants who settled in the area as contract herders. In the second location (a township called Kurti), however, herding is still managed by the Kozak themselves. This change has led to severe land degradation in Jianshe, while Kazaks in Kurti practiced environmentally sound land use practices.
