Abstract
This is a report on Tongan diet and health based on a survey of 425 Tongans. The authors were interested in diet-related diseases associated with economic development and urbanization. The questionnaire asked informants to evaluate foods in terms of preference, perceived nutrition, and frequency of consumption. The authors note that expense of foods rather than perceived value determined Tongan food choices. They relate changes in Tongan diet and health to global trends in food production and distribution.
