Abstract
The author of this source is an indigene, an historian, and an ordained Methodist minister. This source is a revision of his dissertation on the role of Methodist missionaries in the political development of Tonga in the 19th century. The source is based on secondary research and some fieldwork. With a very obvious pro-Methodist missionary bias, the author concludes that Tonga would not be an independent kingdom today without the help of the missionaries.
