Abstract
This source is a collection of 633 Tongan proverbs, pieces of folk wisdom and commonly used phrases. It contains the Tongan phrase, a close, nearly literal translation, and a discussion of its meaning and context of use. It includes proverbs on over thirty topics, such as farming and plants; food; manufactures; animals; ships and sailing; weather; geography; gods and religion; courtship, marriage and domestic relations; disease, medicine, death, and burial; kava; war; and sports and games. Since the style of many of the proverbs is metaphorical, it has often been difficult to index them for their exact intention. Users are recommended to try a variety of subjects when searching.
