Ceremonies for children and social frequency in Tikopia
Oceania • 27 (1) • Published In 1956 • Pages: 12-55
By: Firth, Raymond.
Abstract
In this paper Firth describes rites for the child that are held during pregnancy, at birth and during early childhood. From these data Firth raises two questions: what are the social functions of these rites and what theoretical explanations can be given for the intermitant frequency of performing these rites in Tikopia.
