Ethnography of the Santa Cruz Islands

Abstract
This article primarily deals with the material culture of the Santa Cruz Islands. Short sections deal with social organization, economy and religion. The article, while based primarily on Wilhelm Joest's field notes and collection of Santa Cruz objects in Rautenstrauch-Joest Museum in Cologne, also draws on all available literature. The author was a leader of the German Historical School which explained the growth of civilization by hypothesizing the diffusion of complexes of culture traits (Kulturkreise). In Oceania, Graebner recognized six successive layers or culture strata. This theory forms the basis for his analysis of the Culture History of Santa Cruz (pp. 158-184). It is, however, also apparent in the descriptive body of the source. (For a general discussion of this school, including Graebner's Oceanic culture layers see The History of Ethnological Theory, by Robert H. Lowie, pp. 177-185.)
