Abstract
This article consists of three parts. The first of these deals with '…a spatial analysis of ethnographic data from the Trobriand Islands and advances another theory on the origins of chieftainship' (p. 29). Part two describes locational factors within the Kula network, which Irwin believes will throw light on its evolution and development. The third part discusses the emergence of the Kula in the broader context of trade and economic development in the general Massim area.
