In this book Malinowski applies the psychoanalytic method to a non-European people, the Trobriand Islanders. Malinowski concludes that the Oedipus complex as found among the Europeans does not exist here. Rather, it is in a sense, split; the ambivalent love and hate felt toward the father by Europeans is here replaced by simple love for the father and dislike for the maternal uncle, while incestuous feelings toward the mother are replaced by incestuous feelings toward the sister. In elaborating this thesis, Malinowski presents data on childhood activities, sex and courtship, married life and family relationships, myth, magic, and sorcery.
