Abstract
This article examines warfare '…in terms of the short and long term organisation of production of the precontact Orokaiva and considers elements of the current division of labour which are more readily understood in terms of the past. Work carried out in this area in relation to New Guinea highland ethnography suggests some possibilities for wider comparison. Several causal explanations of warfare are considered during the course of the paper and some criticisms are offered '(p. 487). The author's main purpose in this work, however, is to describe the operation of traditional warfare and its relation to other aspects of social life.
